The question
The AI replacement narrative often assumes expertise can be extracted from people, embedded in software, and scaled while the human labor system is reduced. In consequential work, the extraction may remove more than labor. It may remove the people, relationships, dissent, tacit knowledge, and continuing observations that keep the representation corrigible.
The resulting system can appear more standardized while losing access to the weak, contextual, and low-frequency signals that reveal when the standard representation has stopped matching the work.
Expertise is not a static inventory
Operational knowledge is reproduced through contact with changing conditions, informal coordination, anomaly recognition, questioning, adaptation, and recovery. A workforce is not merely a source from which knowledge was previously extracted. It can be a continuing work-as-done anchor.
That anchor is valid only while it reaches people with current contact with the work and those people can contradict the official representation without penalty.
HAOP lens
HAOP's deposited framework treats recursive information degradation as a workflow hazard. Representations can be repeatedly summarized, classified, merged, selected, stored, retrieved, and transformed until provenance, context, uncertainty, or situated knowledge disappears.
The work-design response is not simply “keep a human in the loop.” It is to preserve the human throughline, define the grounding the function requires, enforce Anchor Access, retain correction signals, and protect the ability to pause or contradict the representation before consequence.
